IS FOREST FRIENDLY TIMBER USED?
We make every effort to ensure that all our doors and raw lumber suppliers claim they purchase from Managed Forest sources and we especially support those where replanting programs are employed.
Some species of timber have a restricted cutting allocation per annum and it is therefore possible that we may offer a product in an alternative timber which you would really prefer.
ARE YOUR PRODUCTS SOLID OAK, ASH, PINE, HARDWOOD,WALNUT?
No. While 99% of our products are solid this does not normally mean that they are solid oak, pine, hardwood etc. It is quite normal & standard practice for such products to be made from engineered components. This means that the products will be a veneer of oak, ash, pine etc. over a composite core. Making products this way gives a much more stable construction being less susceptible to problems that solid timber components have such as twisting & bowing.
Other benefits of making products this way are:
a. Kinder to forests
b. Much more cost effective
WHAT IS DOWEL CONSTRUCTION?
Dowel construction doors are made of separate components i.e. Stiles, Head Rail, Mid Rails, Bottom Rails etc. The main components are joined by Bore Holes and Fluted Dowels which are glued and inserted into the dowel holes. The door is then pressed by hydraulic or pneumatic press to complete its assembly. This method is employed to assemble ‘Economical’ exterior doors and almost always to assemble interior doors.
WHAT IS MORTICE & TENON CONSTRUCTION?
Mortice & Tenon refers to the main joints of two pieces of wood. A Mortice & Tenon Joint basically means that two pieces of wood are joined by carving a tenon peg on one piece of wood and boring a mortice hole in another. The tenon is then glued and passed through the mortice hole, it is glued and wedged in place to secure a firm joint. This is a well proven way of joining two pieces of wood together and has been employed since man kind invented joinery. A MT construction is therefore superior to a dowel built exterior door in withstanding the climate.
NOTE: Most modern interior doors are built with dowel construction as they are not exposed to severe weather conditions and Dowel are therefore adequate.
WHAT ARE RAISED MOULDINGS?
Raised Mouldings are a separately carved or machined beading fixed to the face of a door. These are normally applied around the Fielded Panels and Glass Openings. Raised Mouldings give the door a great deal of character and visual depth.
CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT THE FIRE RATING IS FOR MY DOOR?
Only specific fire doors sold by Ideal Doors have a fire rating. None of our internal or external doors have an official fire rating.
The fire doors sold by Ideal Doors all have a 1/2 hour fire rating.
CAN MY DOOR BE PAINTED, STAINED, OILED OR WAXED?
IF your door is treated in acordance to our guide lines we will Guarantee your door for ten years – Excluding white doors 1 year Guarantee.
All types of internal doors can be treated with paint or varnish type finishes. Some types such as the oak engineered internal doors can be treated with an OIL based or a WATER based Clear varnish. We do not recommend ‘Danish Oil’ or similar. Be sure to apply ample coats to a new door and fresh coats periodically. Please ensure all end grains and the top and bottom edges are also treated.
External Doors – Paint
External doors, frames and panels may be treated with exterior quality paint. A primer coat, 2 undercoats and 2 gloss coats are recommended. Be sure to seal both the top edge and bottom edge underneath and any lock hinge or letter plate cut outs to prevent moisture entering the timber.
External Doors – Stain or Varnish
External Doors, frames and panels may be treated with a ‘spirit based micro-porous’ treatment of quality exterior grade. A pre-dec coat and four top coats are recommended. Be sure to seal both the top edge and bottom edge underneath the door and any lock hinge or letter plate cut outs to prevent moisture entering the timber. A pigmented treatment should be used to protect the timber from ultraviolet rays. Clear varnish alone is not sufficient to protect the timber.
NEVER use a ‘water based’ product on your new external doors, frames, panels or windows. We do not consider these to give adequate protection and no guarantee claim will be entertained for goods treated with such products.
HOW SHOULD I POLISH/STAIN/VARNISH MY DOORS?
We cannot offer any professional advice as we are not decorators. We suggest that you seek advise from such a professional or a decorators suppliers.
THE LABEL ON THE DOOR STATES THAT I CANNOT USE WAX, TEAK OIL OR VARNISH……..WHY NOT?
When a door is manufactured, it has a controlled moisture content. The above mentioned treatments will not seal the moisture content into the door, therefore allowing moisture ingress or loss to occur causing the door to either swell or shrink. Only a full paint finish (primer, undercoat, gloss) or high performance wood stain should be used thereby maintaining the moisture content.
DOES THE GLASS MEET BRITISH STANDARDS?
Yes. All our glass products are produced up to or exceeding Building Regulations. For doors either TOUGHENED SAFETY GLASS or 6mm ANNEALED glass is supplied as a minimum standard, some are even supplied with LAMINATE SAFETY GLASS at our consideration.
DO I MEASURE IN INCHES OR MILLIMETRES?
Inches is the most popular way of measuring your door. Most domestic properties in U.K. use Imperial size doors (78″x27″ or 78″x30″ etc.). Some properties built in recent years do have Metric sized doors.
IS MY DOOR A STANDARD SIZE?
The standard sizes available for each door are shown in the individual pictorials on the applicable pages. It is worth noting the following :
- Dowel External Doors are normally 40mm thickness unless shown.
- Mortice & Tenon Doors are normally 44mm thickness unless shown.
- Internal Doors in Imperial sizes are normally 35mm thickness unless shown.
- Internal Doors in Metric sizes can be either 35mm or 40mm Thickness depending on the product.
MY DOOR IS NOT A STANDARD SIZE. CAN I STILL GET A DOOR?
Yes, Email us your details and we will quote you
I NEED TO REDUCE MY DOOR TO SUIT MY DOOR OPENING. HOW MUCH CAN I SAFELY CUT OFF EACH SIDE?
On external doors we recommend that you cut off no more than 9mm from any given edge. Door openings are sometimes a non standard size e.g. 31 1/2″ x 78″. We would advise therefore that you buy an 80” x 32” door and reduce the height rather than the width, as there is more depth to the bottom rail than the door stiles.
Removing more than 1” from either the height or width will invalidate the door guarantee as the integrity of the door’s construction may be affected.
On internal doors, we recommend no more than 9mm (3/8 inch) be removed from the sides, top and bottom of the door. As with the external door, if a greater amount requires removal from the height of a door it should be taken from the bottom rail.
CAN YOU CUT MY DOOR TO……?
No, we do not have a cut to size service. Fitting the door in to suit your frame really needs to be done on site by your joiner to suit the frame.
